Nuremberg in the middle of the sixteenth century.
The Franconian knight Walther von Stolzing comes to Nuremberg to seel his possessions and to settle in the city as a townsman. He finds assistance in the house of the goldsmith and Meistersinger Veit Pogner. Here he meets the goldsmith's daughter Eve and falls in love with her. For both young people it is love at first sight.
