| In late 1914, the British and French navy was assigned the task of attacking the Turkish capital of Constantinople. There was only one obstruction - the defensive hill forts and sea mines of the Dardanelles...
For months, Allied battleships fought bloody duels with the big guns of the Turkish forts, while the enemy light artillery took a lethal toll of the smaller minesweepers. After the disastrous losses of 15 March 191, which included the battleship Irresistible, it became clear that seapower alone could not crack the Turkish defences. A land assault would have to be launched. The landings - and the months of bitter trench warfare which followed, would go down in military history as one of the most horrific campaigns ever fought... |
