| Born on August 4th 1900, one of 9 children to the fourteenth Earl of Strathmore, the extraordinary life of Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, known around the world as 'The Queen Mother', spanned the 20th century. When she died in 2002 she was 102 years of age.
As Queen she swept aside the nation's disappointment at the abdication of Edward VIII and invigorated the monarchy once again, inventing the Royal walkabout in the process.
Then labelled by Hitler as the 'most dangerous woman in Europe' she supported both her husband King George and her country through the privations of the Second World War, working tirelessly to maintain national morale.
Finally as the 'nation's favourite Grandmother' she stepped aside as her daughter, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the thrown. The Queen Mother remained as ever, the rock behind the Monarchy.
