| Farmer Ian Coutes is found burned to death in a suspicious house fire. The Taggart team is called to the small village of Fenmore to investigate.
It quickly becomes apparent that Fenmore is a divided community. Foot and mouth disease has destroyed generations of farming and heightened animosity between locals and incomers, in particular against Mark Andrews who works for a land development company which is buying up local farm land.
The investigation team discovers that the dead man had been in serious debt and had sold most of his land to the company.
A second farmer is murdered, and when DCI Burke discovers that Andrews has a criminal record for intimidation, it puts him at the top of the suspect list.
However, when a third farmer is murdered it becomes clear that something more sinister is going on in Fenmore.
