| The powerful wartime story of the Ashton Family. Living in Liverpool during the Second World War they struggle to deal with the harsh realities of life. Their sons are sent abroad to fight, children are evacuated and those who remain at home live in constant fear, either of the War Office telegram or the Luftwaffe.
THE FACTS OF LIFE.
Edwin Ashton and his wife Jean are celebrating their wedding anniversary. David Ashton is expecting to be employed at the printing works but it doesn't materialise so, in desperation, he joins the Air Force. Margaret brings John Porter home for the first time.
TO DIE FOR SPAIN.
Phillip Ashton decides to return to Spain to rejoin his old brigade in the Spanish Civil War, much to the dismay of the rest of the family. After being wounded he returns home.
LINES OF BATTLE.
Jean Ashton is anxious about her family. Margaret marries John Porter and Shelia isn't happy about evacuating her children. Gwyn Roberts is in trouble.
THE SUMMER BEFORE THE WAR.
Margaret is busy evacuating schoolchildren and John is called up. David, now in the Air Force meets a local girl, Peggy and she gets pregnant. Sheila decides not to have her children evacuated. War is announced by the Prime Minister.
THE GATE OF THE YEAR.
Margaret isn't happy living with John's mother and goes home for the evening John gets an emergency posting overseas and has to leave within two hours. His mother pretends she doesn't know where Margaret is and he leaves not knowing that she's expecting a baby. |
