| Sam returns from sea and finds many things in Skellerton have changed. He is upset about the loss of his Grandfather. His mind strays back to his boyhood and he relives the actual day his father left and his last words. Arthur Corby, in desperation, asks Sam for help.

Sam moves in with jack. Eileen and Frank move into Sam's house. David returns to Sarah but she isn't happy about returning to Germany. George is anxious about money.
HALF A LOAF
October 1951 brings around huge social changes. An election is due and the labour candidate for Golwick is Frank Barraclough.
TWO STEPS FORWARD, ONE STEP BACK
George has found work in Cornwall. Arthur Corby asks Sam to take Sarah his daughter out as he needs to be alone. A seaside trip with Sarah, Jack and Ethel is very revealing.
