| Die Walkure.
Act 1: A stranger seeks the shelter of Hunding's house. Hunding's wife asks him to stay. Hunding's suspicions are aroused. The stranger tells his story: how he was a twin, lost his mother and sister, grew up in the forest with his father. Hunding realizes that this is his worst enemy. He challenges the man, his guest for this night, to combat the next morning. When the master of the house has gone to bed, his wife tells the stranger of the sword left in the house on her wedding day by an unknown guest. The stranger seizes the sword and gives it the name 'Nothung' - 'sword of my eed'. Passion flares between the woman and the stranger, they recognize each other as Siegmund and Sieglinde, twin children of Walse, and they escape into the forest. |
