| West Coast Legends. This outstanding DVD includes live footage of performances by two of the top jazz combos on the West Coast, the Zoot Sims Quartet and the Shelly Manne Quartet. Captured on film on two separate 1970 LA club dates, these exciting bands swing from start to finish. One of the great Lester Young proteges, John Haley "Zoot" Sims developed one of the most recognizable voices on the tenor saxophone. His cool sound was characterized by its lyrical grace and irrepressible swinging feel. An innovative musician, Zoot's ability to always hit the right note at the right time made him a legend. Whether playing on a delicate ballad or a high-flying up-tempo tune, his inspired solos always brought the most out of the musicians he performed with. Sims became famous as a member of Woody Herman's Second Herd. The band's horn section was called the "Four Brothers" and featured Zoot along with saxophonists Stan Getz, Herbie Stewart and Serge Chaloff. Filmed live at Dante's in Los Angeles, Zoot shows why many consider him to be the most swinging jazz saxophonist of his day. Arguably the top drummer and bandleader on the West Coast, Shelly Manne was universally respected for his distinctive melodic playing, dazzling technique and cohesive ensembles. During his fifty-year career, Manne recorded prolifically with many of the greatest sideman in jazz. His collaborations with Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker and Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars paved the way for the development of the West Coast Jazz movement. Filmed live at his legendary club, Shelly's Manne Hole, the drummer leads a first rate combo featuring tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper, pianist Hampton Hawes, and the incomparable bass virtuosos Ray Brown. |
